EEG (Electroencephalography)
EEG (Electroencephalography) is a simple, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain. It is one of the most important tests for diagnosing epilepsy, seizure disorders, fainting spells, sleep problems, and other brain conditions.
Why is EEG Done?
- To detect and confirm epilepsy and seizure disorders
- To investigate causes of blackouts, fainting, or spells
- To study sleep disorders
- To assess brain function after head injury, stroke, or infection
- To evaluate dementia, confusion, or altered mental status
- To plan and monitor epilepsy treatment
How is EEG Performed?
During the test, small metal discs (electrodes) are placed on the scalp. These electrodes pick up brain wave activity and record it on a computer. The test is safe, painless, and usually takes 30–45 minutes.
Benefits of EEG
- Quick and safe procedure
- No injections or radiation exposure
- Provides valuable information about brain activity
- Helps in early and accurate diagnosis
- Guides treatment for epilepsy and related disorders
