EMG (Electromyography)
Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of muscles and the nerves controlling them. It helps in identifying the cause of muscle weakness, numbness, pain, or nerve dysfunction.
Why is EMG Test Done?
- To diagnose nerve compression or injury (sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome)
- To differentiate between nerve and muscle disorders
- To detect neuropathies (peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy)
- To evaluate myopathies (muscle weakness due to muscle diseases)
- To assess conditions like ALS (Motor Neuron Disease)
How is EMG Performed?
A fine needle electrode is inserted into selected muscles to record electrical activity at rest and during movement. The signals are displayed on a monitor for analysis. The test may cause mild discomfort but is generally well tolerated.
Benefits of EMG Test
- Helps identify the exact cause of muscle weakness
- Distinguishes between nerve and muscle diseases
- Guides treatment decisions for neurological and muscular disorders
- Performed as an outpatient procedure with quick recovery
