NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity Test)
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) test is a diagnostic procedure that measures how fast electrical signals travel through your nerves. It helps in detecting nerve damage, neuropathy, and muscle-nerve disorders. It is commonly done along with EMG (Electromyography) for accurate results.
Why is NCV Test Done?
- To detect nerve damage or injury
- To diagnose peripheral neuropathy (diabetes, vitamin deficiency, alcohol-related)
- To evaluate tingling, numbness, burning sensations
- To assess weakness in hands or legs
- To check for carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, sciatica
- To differentiate between nerve and muscle problems
How is NCV Performed?
Small surface electrodes are placed on the skin over the nerve to be tested. Mild electrical impulses are given, and the response speed is recorded. The procedure is safe, quick, and usually takes 20–40 minutes. Patients may feel mild tingling during the test, but it is not harmful.
Benefits of NCV Test
- Accurately detects nerve damage
- Guides treatment for neuropathy and nerve injuries
- Helps monitor progress of treatment
- Safe, non-invasive, and quick procedure
