Stroke (Brain Attack)
A stroke, also known as a brain attack, occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Stroke is a medical emergency and immediate treatment is crucial to reduce brain damage and improve outcomes.
Symptoms of Stroke
- Sudden weakness or numbness in face, arm, or leg (often on one side of the body)
- Trouble speaking, slurred speech, or difficulty understanding
- Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes
- Severe sudden headache without known cause
- Dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination
Types of Stroke
- Ischemic Stroke: Caused by a blood clot blocking a brain artery.
- Hemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by a blood vessel bursting inside the brain.
- Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): A “mini-stroke” where symptoms last a short time but indicate high risk of a full stroke.
Treatment & Recovery
- Immediate emergency care with clot-busting medications (in ischemic strokes)
- Surgery or interventions for hemorrhagic strokes
- Rehabilitation including physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy
- Lifestyle changes to prevent recurrence (diet, exercise, quitting smoking, controlling diabetes & BP)
- Regular follow-ups with a neurologist for monitoring and management
